Our lives are filled with habits from when we wake up in the morning to when we retire for sleep. Humans can’t function without them. We’d be so preoccupied thinking about every little task we do, we would only achieve a fraction of our day’s challenges, otherwise.
Habits can also hinder us from achieving what we want by wasting time on unproductive activities. Don’t get me wrong. We all need some down time away from the stresses of life to recharge our battery. But when they take over our life we need to take stock and review whether the habit is healthy for us.
For example, I have several social media accounts which I check daily. But I found may time flipping through TikTok videos increasing to the extent that I wasted an hour or more instead of concentrating on more useful activities. Now there are two issues here. One — the obvious one — is the wasting of productive time.
The other issue centres on, ‘Why am I choosing to do this instead of what I should be doing?’ I have a book called ‘The War of Art’ by Steven Pressfield. Even though I have read the book before, I found reading it again helped me really understand where my issues lie, (apart from just getting my butt on my seat and start my writing!)
My TikTok solution? Might be a bit drastic, but I deleted the app to remove all temptation.
My TV watching time is another habit that needs working on.
What about you? Are there any habits that have gone from relaxation to obsession? Might be a good time to take stock and consider whether you need adjustments in your life, too.
